Useful Information for Berkeley CA
Berkeley, CA is home to the University of California, and is the oldest of all the University of California campuses. It is also the only one known by the nickname "Cal".The city has a reputation for being extremely liberal, and one recent study put it as the 3rd most liberal city in the nation.
The first Europeans to arrive in the Berkeley area was the De Anza expedition of 1776. A group of College of California men decided in 1866 to build a college named after Bishop George Berkeley. Their dreams fell short due to lack of funding, and they merged their efforts with the state to create the first public university in 1868, the University of California campus at Berkeley.
The first post office was opened in 1872, and the railroad followed in the late 1870's. In 1878 the town was incorporated.
To this day, Berkeley is remembered most for the "hippie" movement, complete with psychedelic clothing and colorful antics that frequently made the national news.
