Useful Information for Walnut Creek CA
Walnut Creek, CA was named after a native species of walnut found in the area. Originally settled by Americans when the US - Mexico war ended, the first hotel was built in 1855 and brought even more people to the area. A blacksmith shop and a general store followed, but it was not until the arrival of the railroad in 1891 that the area really started to prosper and grow.
Walnut Creek was not incorporated until 1914, and became the 8th city to be added to Contra Costa County. The railroad ran through Walnut Creek until the late 1970's, and much of the closed railroad track was turned into the popular Iron Horse Trail, a developed and lengthy trail used by hikers, bicyclists, pedestrians and runners.
The first major retail center opened in 1951, and Walnut Creek today is a vibrant and active addition to Contra Costa County.
